Long-Term Preventative Care for Your Eyes and Vision

Regular comprehensive eye exams give your eye doctor the ability to recognize risks to your vision and ocular health—often before they present noticeable symptoms. Even if your eyes seem perfectly healthy, you should have them examined by a qualified eye care practitioner who can either confirm your status or alert you of changes.

The exams we perform at Town Eye Care can detect numerous vision-threatening conditions, including glaucoma and cataracts. These exams also provide us with valuable information about your overall health, helping us assess your risk for several diseases and conditions, like diabetes.

OHIP has changed how exams are covered since September 2023 for seniors. If a patient is healthy and has no outstanding health/eye disease, they are covered once every 18 months. If the patient has a certain medical/eye disease (eg; diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration) that needs to be monitored, the patient is covered once a year.

Some eye diseases can cause permanent vision loss or other severe problems before any other obvious warning signs appear. As such, it is vital to have comprehensive eye exams from experienced medical practitioners. Our eye doctors can detect many potentially severe conditions before they pose imminent threats to your health or vision while also providing you with a plan to mitigate their effects.

When Do I Need An Eye Exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that eye exams be scheduled:

  • Once every 2 to 3 years for adults who are between the ages of 20 and 39
  • Once every 2 years for adults who are between the ages of 40 and 64
  • Once every year for adults who are age 65 or older (these tests will include Goldman tonometry tests to assess your risk of glaucoma

People with specific medical conditions or a family history of eye disease may need their eyes examined more often than suggested above. Once you visit us for a comprehensive eye exam, we can let you know whether you have any conditions that require more frequent appointments to monitor adequately.

What Will Occur During My Eye Exam?

We typically spend between 30 and 60 minutes on each eye exam, depending on your particular needs. We also do our best to let you know if any additional tests will be necessary before you arrive for your exam, so that you can plan accordingly. If you have any questions about how to prepare for your appointment, just contact us and one of our friendly team members will assist you.

Each exam starts with a discussion of your medical history. We will take note of any previously identified ocular or physical health concerns you have, along with medications you have taken and conditions that may run in your family. If you already wear corrective lenses, we will also ask about your current prescription.

The tests we run during your exam will measure:

If you are getting corrective lenses for the very first time, we will also determine your prescription.
